PAHO Caribbean: The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) officially opened the Carissa F. Etienne Emergency Operations Centre at the PAHO/WHO Barbados Office, a tribute to a visionary leader and champion of public health in the Caribbean.

Dr. Amalia Del Riego, PAHO/WHO Representative for Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean Countries, welcomed guests and set the stage for the proceedings.
We were honoured to have members of Dr. Etienne’s family join us for this special occasion, where they received a commemorative book celebrating her legacy in Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean.

Remarks were delivered by PAHO Director Dr. Jarbas Barbosa; Dr. Ciro Ugarte, Director of Public Health Emergencies, who shared a historical perspective on disaster preparedness and the role of the EOC; and Barbados’ Minister of Health and Wellness, Dr. Jerome Walcott, who spoke on national emergency response and collaboration with PAHO.

The event concluded with the unveiling of a plaque and the ribbon cutting to officially open the EOC.
