Dale C. S. Destin – 268Weather – June too soon 2023, from the old mariner’s poem, won’t be forgotten anytime soon. This June was one for the history books! For the very first time ever since they started keeping records way back in 1851, not one, but TWO tropical storms formed between Africa and the Caribbean.

This record-breaking June produced Tropical Storms Bret and Cindy east of the Caribbean. This is unprecedented in 172 years. The chance of this happening is 0.001 percent, based on the current standard climate of 1991 to 2020. This translates to this event not happening again for another thousand years, all things being equal.

To put it into perspective, it’s almost three times rarer than catching a solar eclipse in your own backyard! Both being alive, at the same time, east of the region, is also an occurrence that has not happened in 172 Junes.

Overall, June 2023 saw a total of three storms. Alongside Bret and Cindy, we had Arlene making its presence known in Florida and Cuba. Thankfully, no lives were lost, and damage was minimal.

Bret decided to make a pit stop at Barbados and the Windward Islands, but again, it didn’t cause any casualties or significant destruction. As for Cindy, she gracefully avoided any collision with landmasses. Phew!
