The police are appealing to the general public to be on the alert for online fraud and report all suspicious fraudulent activities without delay.

The appeal comes as a result of reports made by members of the public alleging they were contacted by unknown sources on various social media platforms, informing them of prize winnings unknown to them. In most cases, it turned out as attempts to exploit vulnerable individuals and businesses for money.

It is always advisable for one to pay closer attention to messages sent via phone, email, social media, or malicious websites from individuals posing as credible organizations in an attempt to solicit monetary assistance; especially when it comes to impersonating government officials and other agencies.

The public must also be aware of other cyber crimes such as phishing scams; where cybercriminals lure one to click on links or download attachments that either prompt you to divulge personal and financial information or install malicious software on your device, which gives them access to sensitive material from accounts, credit cards, or security codes.

If you become suspicious or have any doubts while conducting an online transaction, kindly seek professional assistance or contact the Criminal Investigations Department at 462-3913 or 462-3914.
