Dale C. S. Destin: At 10:50 a.m. AST on 16 May 2026, a strong earthquake measuring magnitude 6.1 according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), and 6.4 according to the University of the West Indies Seismic Research Centre (UWI SRC), struck near Antigua and Barbuda and was felt widely across the Northeastern Caribbean.

Based on USGS records dating back to 1960, the earthquake ranks as the third strongest recorded within approximately 80 km (50 miles) of Antigua and Barbuda.

If the UWI SRC magnitude of 6.4 is confirmed, it would tie for the second strongest earthquake within such close proximity to the country on record — and the strongest since the magnitude 7.5 major earthquake northwest of Antigua in 1974, which remains the largest instrumentally recorded earthquake in the Eastern Caribbean.
