Antigua Public Utilities Authority (APUA): The Electricity Business Unit’s annual Disaster Management Meeting was held on Monday, June 8, 2026, under the chairmanship of Transmission and Distribution Engineer, Lyndon Francis.
The meeting forms an important part of the Authority’s preparedness activities at the start of the Atlantic Hurricane Season and provides an opportunity for the team to review plans, procedures, resources, and lessons learned ahead of any potential storm impacts.

Key discussions included ongoing feeder assessments, revisions to priority feeder restoration plans, lessons learned from the team that assisted in Jamaica following Hurricane Melissa, and insights gained from the recent CARILEC Lineworkers Rodeo.
Team members also reviewed post-storm response procedures, material and equipment inventory levels, and safety protocols, including conditions under which field crews must suspend work, such as during lightning activity.

The meeting also provided an opportunity for team members to raise concerns, share suggestions, and engage in open discussion on matters affecting the business unit and its ongoing operations.
Ongoing challenges related to vegetation management were also discussed, particularly fruit trees and other vegetation located near power lines on private properties.

Homeowners are encouraged to consider the mature size and location of trees before planting and to regularly trim and maintain existing vegetation to reduce the risk of interference with utility infrastructure.
Overall, the meeting was productive and positive, with team members demonstrating a strong commitment to preparedness, teamwork, safety, and service excellence.
