Eugene Silcott – Air Traffic Services Operations Manager, Examiner and Instructor: It is unfortunate that I must once again raise the issue of fetes being held at the Sticky Wicket, located at the entrance of the airport.
I previously expressed my concerns about this and was met with criticism from individuals who argued that we should allow young people to have their fun.

Let me clarify, this is not a personal attack on anyone, but rather a serious safety concern for the airport that needs to be addressed before something grave happens.
I strongly urge fête promoters to consider shuttling attendees to the events to prevent congestion at the airport. There are several critical factors to consider:

Firstly, if a fire were to break out at the main terminal, fire trucks would struggle to access the airport. While someone might suggest using the ramp, this poses its own dangers due to the underground fuel lines.
Secondly, in the event of a medical emergency, it would be difficult for emergency vehicles to reach the terminal in time to provide necessary aid.

Thirdly, the noise from these events penetrates the control tower glass, which is not soundproof, causing interruptions that can have serious consequences for aircraft operations.
For instance, a non-native English-speaking pilot might misinterpret instructions, potentially leading to a mid-air collision.

Although aircraft are equipped with Traffic Collision Avoidance Systems (TCAS), no pilot desires to rely on TCAS resolutions, and such incidents must be reported to The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).
Lastly, if an Air Traffic Controller faces difficulties getting to the control tower due to congestion, they have every right to return home, which could lead to the airport being closed.

These factors are critical for the safety and smooth operation of the airport. I understand that many of you may not have an aviation background, so I hope this message raises awareness about the potential risks involved.
We need to find a way to curb this situation that would satisfy all concern. A word to the wise is sufficient.
