H. E. President Mohammad Irfaan Ali

President’s Office

Georgetown

The Cooperative Republic of GUYANA

Excellency:

I have learned of the tragedy that occurred in Guyana and of the loss of life of 19 young students in a fire that engulfed their sleeping quarters. Please accept my deepest sympathy on behalf of the Government and people of Antigua and Barbuda. The heartbreak which their parents are suffering surely impel us all to act to bring calm and peace to those who grieve.

My Government has also learned of the injured students whom the Guyanese authorities wish to fly out to Barbados, in order to provide them specialist medical treatment. A burn unit in Barbados is to be put to use to the benefit of these children, the world has learned.

I have authorized the use of the LIAT ATR that is being used for commercial purposes to immediately proceed to Guyana, in order to airlift those injured students and their medical personnel to Barbados. Working in collaboration with the Court-appointed administrator, I have indicated that all costs are to be borne by Antigua and Barbuda.

I pray for the speedy recovery of the injured students and express the sympathies of the people of Antigua and Barbuda for this immense tragedy. I also take this opportunity to reiterate, Excellency, the assurances of my highest consideration.
