Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre (SLBMC) Paediatric Department – If your child has been diagnosed with Hand Foot and Mouth Disease (HFMD) here are some options you should consider.

Medication Options:

1. Acetaminophen/Paracetamol (Tylenol)

2. Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) only if over 6 months. This should not be given if the child is dehydrated. Consult a physician if you have any doubts.

General Management Will Include:

1. Breastmilk – if your child is under 6 months

2. Giving lots of liquids: water, popsicles, or apple juice. Formula should be continued if this was previously being used. You can also give Pedialyte

3. Offering soft foods applesauce, oatmeal, mashed potatoes eggs.

Please Note:

1. Antibiotics will not help HFMD as it is caused by a virus

2. NEVER use Aspirin

3. Your child can return to school/daycare once he/she has been free of fever for more than 24 hours and mouth ulcers and open blisters have dried.

4. The use of a topical oral anaesthetic or mouth spray can be helpful but should be discussed with your health care provider
