Antigua and Barbuda joins the international community in recognizing Salt Awareness Week (14 -18 March 2022) under the theme “Shake the Salt Habit”.

Consuming too much salt can harm our health and lead to preventable deaths within our population. Salt reduction is one of the most cost-effective strategies for lowering the risk of high blood pressure (hypertension) and other cardiovascular diseases thus protecting the health and wellbeing of our people.

The Ministry of Health, Wellness, and the Environment encourages individuals to:

1. Prepare tasty, low-sodium meals within the home

2. Read labels on packaged foods and choose options that are low in sodium

3. Replace items containing high levels of sodium with healthier low sodium options

4. Advocate for salt reduction policies targeted specifically at the food industry

To further support the public in making healthy, informed choices the Ministry has developed ‘Cook with Love: Shake the Salt Habit’ a three-month campaign aimed at reducing salt intake with the home.
