St. John’s, Antigua: A major step forward in marine observation and forecasting has been achieved with the deployment of a SOFAR Spotter Buoy in Antigua and Barbuda.
The deployment is the third installation in a new regional marine observation network being established by the Caribbean Institute for Meteorology and Hydrology (CIMH) across Caribbean Meteorological Organization (CMO) Member States.
The Antigua and Barbuda deployment brought together:
• Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Services (ABMS)
• Antigua and Barbuda Fisheries Division
• ABDF Coast Guard
• CIMH Regional Instruments Centre
The network will use SOFAR Spotter Buoys and Smart Mooring Monitoring Equipment to collect and transmit near real-time ocean observations, including information on wave and swell conditions and other key marine parameters.
These observations will help strengthen marine forecasting, improve early warning services and support:
- Maritime safety
- Fisheries
- Tourism
- Coastal management
- Disaster preparedness
- Climate resilience
The data will also support CIMH’s Regional Marine Forecast Support Centre (RMFSC) in validating and improving regional marine forecast models.
This important initiative is part of CIMH’s Strengthening Institutional Capacity for a Resilient Caribbean Coastal and Marine Environment (RCCAME) project, supported by the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) through the CARE Programme, with financing from the European Union (EU) through the 11th European Development Fund.
