Dale C. S. Destin: The island-average rainfall outlook for this year continues to show a strong, clear signal toward drier‑than‑normal conditions, i.e., drought conditions are virtually certain to continue.
The latest forecast indicates a 95% chance of below‑normal rainfall (up 9%), compared with a 4% chance of near‑normal totals (down 8%) and only a 1% chance of above‑normal amounts (down 1%).
In short, we had a much drier-than-normal dry season: January to June, and a near certainty of a drier-than-normal wet season: July to December.
This year, from this vantage point, the best rainfall forecast (estimate) is 751 mm (29.6 in) with a 70 percent confidence that it ranges between 614 and 907 mm (24.2 to 35.7 in). The rainfall total forecast falls in the below-normal range for the island.
