National Office of Disaster Services (NODS): Approximately 30 participants from several responding agencies on island and also from Barbuda completed a four-day training on how to effectively deal with hazardous materials (Hazmat) such as chemicals and radioactive substances among others.

The National Office of Disaster Services (NODS) partnered with US SOUTHCOM and the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine Global Institute for Community Health and Development to conduct the training at the Sir Wright George Police Academy at Langfords.

At the end of the training on Thursday, participants engaged in a practical session on identifying hazardous materials, the use of Proper Protective Equipment (PPE) and removing, neutralizing and disposing hazardous materials.

Individuals who took part in the training came from NODS, the Antigua and Barbuda Defence Force (ABDF), the Emergency Medical Services (EMS), the Police Force and the Fire Department.
This forms part of preparations for this year’s Tradewinds Exercise – a security and disaster response activity sponsored by US Southcom which is scheduled for June 3 to 17 in Antigua.
