The Antigua and Barbuda Airport Authority (ABAA) participated in a consultation this past Tuesday with members of the Fitches Creek Residents Association (FCRA) to address concerns related to the ongoing Airfield Rehabilitation Project and its impact on their community.

The meeting, initiated by the Residents Association, provided a platform for open dialogue on key issues including road safety, infrastructure damage, noise, dust, and environmental protection measures within the North East Marine Management Area (NEMMA).

Leading the ABAA delegation were Executive Chairman of the Board of Directors Rolston Potter, Acting CEO Joseph Samuel, Acting Director of Operations Rex Daly, and Mr. Chris Timmerman, Project Management Consultant from Avia NG.

Representatives lead by Mr. Nicholas Rainey from the construction firm Aecon Antigua Construction Inc. also participated.

The Hon. Charles Fernandez, Minister of Tourism, Civil Aviation, Transportation, and Investment, along with members of the Royal Police Force, were also in attendance and actively engaged in the discussions.

The Airport Authority acknowledged the concerns raised and reaffirmed its commitment to minimizing disruptions while advancing the critical infrastructure upgrade, which aims to bring the airport in line with international civil aviation
standards.

As part of its response, the ABAA pledged to implement the following measures:
• Rerouting heavy vehicles to reduce traffic impact on Fitches Creek.

• Advocate for road repairs through the Ministry of Works.

• Establish a formal grievance mechanism for residents to report issues and receive timely feedback.

• Providing regular project updates to keep the community informed throughout the construction period.

The Fitches Creek Residents Association expressed appreciation for the Authority’s proactive engagement and commitment to safeguarding community interests.
