ST. JOHN’S, Antigua, August 24, 2025 – Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre (SLBMC) wishes to address a recent media article alleging that a patient’s phone was stolen while admitted at our facility.

To date, the hospital has received no official reports regarding any mobile phone being stolen on our premises. We wish to assure the public that SLBMC takes matters of security and patient safety very seriously.

A clear process exists for reporting and investigating such concerns, and any credible report made to us will be thoroughly addressed.

We are, however, concerned by the nature of the article, which could cause unnecessary alarm among patients, families, and the wider community.

As a public health institution, we view the media as partners in advancing important conversations around healthcare.

However, with partnership comes responsibility, and we urge media organizations and journalists to uphold their ethical duty to:
• Verify information with credible evidence prior to publication • Avoid sensationalism that may undermine public trust in the health system
• Safeguard patient confidentiality at all times

SLBMC remains committed to providing safe, compassionate care to all patients and to maintaining the public’s trust. Should any credible reports of theft or misconduct be made, we will investigate them thoroughly in line with established procedures.
