A one-week Caricom Disaster Relief Unit (CDRU) training came to a close with a formal ceremony on Monday at La Casa Palmadita in Fitches Creek where participants were presented with certificates.

In attendance were Governor General Dr. Sir Rodney Williams, Deputy Executive Director of the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) Lt. Col. Kester Craig, Director of Operations and Plans with the Regional Security System (RSS) Lt. Col. Jeffrey Forde and Programme Officer with CDEMA Rasheed Pinder.

Also in attendance were Assistant Commissioner of Police Samuel Joseph, Inspector Jeff Africa from the Antigua and Barbuda Fire Service and Director of the National Office of Disaster Services (NODS) Sherrod James.

The training which targeted law enforcement officers from Antigua and Barbuda and around the region, along with disaster personnel, was aimed at strengthening their disaster relief response capabilities.

The CDRU serves as a vital first relief mechanism that provides immediate humanitarian assistance, facilitates logistics, supports emergency telecommunications and coordinates national and regional relief efforts.

The training was supported by CDEMA, the RSS, the World Food Programme (WFP) and US Southcom.
