Caribbean Disaster Management Agency (CDEMA): Monday, May 20, 2025, marked the start of the first-ever Copernicus Earth Observation training in the Caribbean, bringing together 29 experts from 13 countries in Barbados.

Hosted by the European Union Delegation in Barbados, the Caribbean Institute for Meteorology and Hydrology (CIMH) and CDEMA, the training focuses on harnessing satellite data to strengthen emergency planning and resilience.
Over the next five days, disaster management professionals will build their capacity to better anticipate and respond to climate-related hazards using Copernicus tools and data.

Executive Director of CDEMA, Ms. Elizabeth Riley, shared the value of the training saying, The value of Earth Observation data is not theoretical, it has already proven impactful in operational settings.
In 2024 alone, Copernicus services were leveraged by the Regional Response Mechanism coordinated by CDEMA to support decision-making and response during Hurricane Beryl and the unprecedented wildfires in Belize.

These examples demonstrate the power of geospatial intelligence in enhancing situational awareness and coordination during crises.”
