The National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) experienced a fire at the active disposal zone of the Cook’s Sanitary Landfill on Friday, 27th February 2026, at approximately 6:30pm.

The Authority has been engaged in extinguishing the flames; however, landfill fires can be challenging, and the site remains smouldering with fumes, resulting in its closure.

NSWMA would like to publicly thank all the government stakeholders who acted swiftly in the emergency situation to gain control of the fire and the management and staff of Cook’s Sanitary Landfill who joined forces to aid in the extinguishing of the blaze.

The Authority expresses sincere apologies to the surrounding communities for the disruption of their day-to-day activities, to include the poor air quality.

People with respiratory ailments are asked to stay indoors or take precautionary measures. As we move forward, the Authority pledges to minimize hazardous events within the Landfill.

The Cooks Sanitary Landfill is CLOSED today, Saturday, 28th February, 2026, due to an overnight monitoring situation. We apologize for any inconvenience that this may cause.
