Dale C. S. Destin: Above-normal swells and hazardous surf conditions are affecting the northern Caribbean, including Antigua and Barbuda, with impacts expected to spread southward across the Caribbean and into Guyana and surrounding coastal areas by tomorrow.

Swells are forecast to peak near 4.0 metres (13 feet), with even higher surf heights along exposed coastlines across parts of the northern Caribbean later today. These conditions pose a serious risk to coastal communities, beachgoers, fishers, and marine operators.

What is causing these swells?
The dangerous sea conditions are being generated by a powerful low-pressure system centered over the far northern Atlantic Ocean. This system is producing strong, persistent winds over a wide area of open ocean, allowing wave energy to build significantly over time and distance.
