The National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) conducted an overnight cleanup exercise in the capital city of St. John’s from 12:00 a.m. to 5:00 a.m. on Monday, December 22, 2025.

The operation was led by General Manager, Mrs. Indira James Henry, and involved a team of employees who carried out grass cutting, trimming and pruning of trees, sweeping and flushing of gutters, and the removal of sludge and solid waste along major streets and alleys within the city.

Heavy-duty equipment was utilized during the exercise, including trucks used to remove compacted mud from blocked drainage outlets to improve water flow and reduce flood risk.

At approximately 4:00 a.m., the NSWMA team was joined by officers from the Central Board of Health, who conducted sanitation activities including gutter spraying, the application of white lime, and the placement of bait to support rodent control efforts.

The National Solid Waste Management Authority advises that a similar cleanup exercise is scheduled for early Tuesday morning, as part of its ongoing programme to improve sanitation and environmental health in St. John’s.
