It’s not every day that a person gets to turn their passion for a profession and embark on a dedicated journey of public education.
However, this is the story of an emergency and disaster management specialist who has devoted much of his career to doing just that.

Meet Anderson Tuitt, a twenty-five-year veteran who has served in the noble and humanitarian professions of emergency medical care, military, law enforcement, firefighting, and disaster management. Anderson is deeply passionate about safety, safety-related issues, and emergency preparedness and response.

During his career, he discovered his passion for educating people and identified a gap in information reaching some individuals about how to prepare for and respond to various emergencies and disasters.

It was this passion and his love for his profession that created what we now know as STEPS – Safety Through Education Prevention and Strategy.
This marriage of passions led to the official creation of the STEPS Safety Awareness program on August 29th 2015, under the STEPS brand.

A program designed to educate and bring awareness to safety and safety-related issues to communities across Antigua and Barbuda and beyond.
The core areas of this program include fire safety, road safety, medical safety, personal safety, water safety and disaster safety.

It was the time spent in these professions and the considerable amount of knowledge gained that he decided to give back to communities by sharing what he knows to keep people safe.

Over the years, Anderson has imparted his knowledge at various education facilities, engaged with faith-based organisations, businesses, community groups, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and summer camps, on the importance of preparedness and understanding how to respond in emergencies.

When asked about why he does this work, Anderson states, “There is a need for people to be educated as to what they should do in times of emergency and disasters, and my goal is to fill that gap the best way I can.”
During the COVID-19 pandemic, when face-to-face contact was limited or non-existent, this did not stop Anderson from continuing his endeavours as he saw it as an opportunity to not only rise and adjust to the occasion but also to modernise his community work, hence another facet to the online presence of STEPS was established with the launch of its website https://safetysteps.org/ .

This platform was widely used throughout the pandemic to keep people informed about COVID-19 and other areas of safety that he focuses on. This digital tool has expanded and amplified Tuitt’s goal. The site delivers information daily on natural and man-made emergencies to an international audience.

“I will continue to do this work as long as I can and in any possible way because making a difference in one life is a difference in a household. A difference in a household is a difference in a community, and ultimately it is a difference in a country,” Tuitt stated.
Anderson continues to champion the cause for increased information sharing and education about safety and safety-related issues.

STEPS is currently pursuing corporate partnerships to support the advancement of this goal and to deliver new projects in the pipeline.
“I want to thank everyone who has supported me and the STEPS initiative over the last ten years and we look forward to ten more years of positively impacting our people through information and education.”
