Kingston, Jamaica – Eight independent newsrooms across the Caribbean are now better equipped to keep their communities informed in times of crisis, following the successful deployment of Emergency Media Kits by the Media Institute of the Caribbean (MIC) with support from the British High Commission in Jamaica.

This rollout marks a pivotal milestone in regional media resilience ahead of the Atlantic hurricane season. The following outlets were selected through a rigorous, needs-based application process managed by MIC:

• Island Press Box, Antigua and Barbuda
• I Witness News, St. Vincent and the Grenadines
• Prime News, Guyana
• SKN Newsline, St. Kitts and Nevis
• SVG Broadcasting, St. Vincent and the Grenadines
• Grenada Broadcasting Network (GBN), Grenada
• Zip FM, Jamaica
• Channel 7 News Belize (Tropical Vision Ltd.)

Each recipient demonstrated editorial independence, a powerful public-interest mandate, broad audience reach, financial need, and a clear commitment to disaster preparedness and community engagement.

They all met the criteria signalling their contribution and commitment to building resilient journalism through outstanding collaboration.

The deployment of these Emergency Media Kits, designed for mobility in trying situations, comprises cameras, microphones, lights, hard drives, memory cards, and tripods. This initiative reflects the outstanding partnership between MIC and the British High Commission in Jamaica.

This collaboration is a testament to the shared vision of safeguarding press freedom and strengthening the resilience of media entities, particularly where Small Island Developing States (SIDS) highly vulnerable to natural disasters.
