Phishing Scams Are on the Rise – Stay Alert and Protect Yourself!

Cybercriminals are increasingly using fake emails, phone calls, and messages to trick people into giving away personal and banking information; a tactic known as phishing or smishing.

These scams can lead to unauthorized access to your account and potential financial loss. In many cases, once money has been sent or transferred, it can be difficult to recover. That’s why prevention is key.

Common Signs of a Phishing Scam:

  • Messages claiming your account is blocked or compromised
Example: “Urgent: Your account has been locked. Click here to restore access.”
  • Requests to “verify” your personal or banking details
Example: “We noticed unusual activity. Please confirm your card number and PIN.”
  • Unfamiliar links or attachments
Example: An email with a PDF invoice or a link that looks slightly off, like http://www.yourb4nk.com.
  • Threatening or urgent language
Example: “Act now or your account will be closed in 24 hours.”

What You Should Do:

  1. Never share passwords, PINs, or One-Time Passwords (OTP), not even with your bank.
  2. Avoid clicking suspicious links. Visit your bank’s official website or use their mobile app directly.
  3. Double-check email addresses or phone numbers. Scammers often use ones that look similar to your bank’s.
  4. Be cautious with unexpected offers. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
  5. Turn on alerts for your accounts to monitor any unusual activity.

If You Suspect a Scam:

  • Contact your bank immediately, they can help secure your account.
  • Report the scam to local authorities or the cybercrime unit.
  • Avoid responding to the scammer.
  • Get your devices checked by a certified IT professional if you think your data may have been compromised.

Remember:
Your bank will never ask you to share sensitive information like your PIN or OTP via email, text, or phone.

If a transaction is fraudulent, recovery may be difficult, but acting quickly gives you the best chance to minimize loss and secure your accounts. Stay vigilant. Protect your money. Protect your identity.
