Dale C. S. Destin: Saturday, May 17, 2025, delivered a deluge across portions of Antigua and Barbuda, prompting many to ask: Was this normal? How unusual was it? Let’s break down the numbers and put this extreme rainfall into perspective.

How Much Rain Fell?

Rainfall across the country varied widely—from 30 mm  (1.18 in) in southern and central Antigua to 150 mm (5.91 in) or more in the north. The most rain fell over northern Antigua, where flash flooding was reported.

At V. C. Bird International Airport (VCBIA)114.4 mm (4.50 in) of rain fell on Saturday, with the vast majority occurring between 4 PM and midnight.

This makes it the wettest May 17 on record at the site, in a data series dating back to 1964shattering the previous record of 40.4 mm (1.59 in) set on May 17, 1974.

To give context:

  • The average rainfall for the entire month of May at VCBIA is 89.6 mm (3.53 in).
  • This means more than a month’s worth of rain fell in less than 8 hours, in an evening.
