Antigua and Barbuda National Park: Recently, two individuals were stung by box jellyfish around Pigeon Point in Antigua, sparking concerns about these fascinating but dangerous creatures.

While box jellyfish are a real threat, it’s important to understand both the risks and how to protect yourself while enjoying our beautiful coastal waters.

What You Need to Know: Box jellyfish can be extremely painful, with their tentacles packed with venom that can cause intense stings. In severe cases, it can lead to serious health issues like heart failure, and allergic reactions can be severe.

How to Avoid Box Jellyfish:

  1. Be cautious in the water: Box jellyfish tend to be found in shallow waters near the coast, especially in warm weather, so be extra cautious during peak jellyfish season.
  2. Wear protective clothing: If you’re swimming or snorkeling in areas where jellyfish are present, consider wearing a full-body swimsuit or a protective sting suit.
  3. Observe local advisories: Always check with local authorities or lifeguards for any warnings about jellyfish presence in the water. Given the recent events, we advise extra caution in the Falmouth area over the next few days.
  4. Check the water: Before swimming, look out for jellyfish in the water. Their bell-shaped bodies and long tentacles are distinctive, but they can be hard to spot sometimes.

What to Do If Stung:

  • Stay calm: Gently remove any tentacles from the skin (use a stick, the edge of a towel, or handfuls of wet sand to avoid further contact). Avoid scratching the area, as this can lead to additional stings occurring.
  • Rinse with vinegar or seawater: Avoid using fresh water as it can worsen the pain. Rub the area with aloe vera to help soothe the symptoms
  • Seek medical help: If symptoms persist, such as difficulty breathing or intense pain, seek medical attention immediately.

While these creatures are certainly a part of our ecosystem, we can still enjoy the ocean with some precaution. Always be informed and stay safe while exploring Antigua and Barbuda’s marine wonders!
