UWI Seismic Research Centre: Over the weekend, several auto solutions were posted to social media for events east of Barbuda. Please see above for more information.
This is a reminder that this area is one of our region’s more seismically active zones, and we need to be prepared for earthquakes of any size. Prepare, plan, and practice.

Just for clarification on the terminology used. Swarms of earthquakes can occur at volcanoes, which are one of the main signs that a volcano is restless.
We also use the term swarm for tectonic earthquakes like these, and these are usually larger than volcanic earthquakes.

Earthquakes occur on timelines far longer than human lives. The plates are always in motion, and this activity essentially is just a release of energy in one part of the plate boundary.
Prepare for any hazard: have an emergency kit. Plan emergency routes and make plans with your family for day and night and in your workplace. Practice the plans ever so often so you can foster a culture of preparedness.

Our research has indicated that earthquakes of that magnitude and even bigger can occur again, especially in this zone. While this may be a small release of energy, we advocate the need to be prepared.
Population size, density, and urban spaces have increased since the 70’s. A repeat event can be disastrous for any of the surrounding islands.
