Close to 30 secondary school students participated in the 2nd Youth in Disaster Management Workshop held on Tuesday 15th October 2024 as part of activities marking International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction which was observed on Sunday, October 13.

The 27 students from both private and government institutions received first-hand knowledge of the workings of the National Office of Disaster Services (NODS) which include warehousing, geographic information system (GIS), telecommunications, the various administrative departments like the registry and accounting, and facilitation which involves liaising with volunteers in the various districts.

Students also had the opportunity to learn about the functions of the National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC) which involves various agencies coming together at NODS to coordinate disaster management efforts, particularly during the response and recovery phases.

Based on the feedback received , the students were enlightened about the many aspects of NODS and had an enjoyable time away from the classroom. One student who attended last year returned for a second time.

The week of activities and this year’s International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction  (IDDRR) are being celebrated under the theme ”Empowering the next generation for a resilient future”.

NODS will continue to build on the initiatives undertaken to further empower the nation’s young people and to get them more involved in disaster management.
