Dale C. S. Destin: Antigua and Barbuda is now officially in the flash flood season, which runs from September to November, a subseason of the wet season.

With September underway, the country has entered a period known for excessive rainfall and increased flash flood risks.

The flash flood season typically brings 399.3 mm (15.72 in) of rainfall, a significant 35% of the 1156.7 mm (45.54 in) expected annually.

This year’s forecast for the season predicts above-normal rainfall, heightening the potential for flash floods and making preparedness more essential than usual.

What Are Flash Floods?

flash flood is a sudden and intense short-lasting flood caused by heavy rainfall over a short time. Unlike regular floods, flash floods develop quickly, often within minutes to hours after the onset of rain.

They can inundate streets, homes, and low-lying areas with little warning, posing severe threats to life and property.
