AL98 ALERT STATEMENT
ANTIGUA AND BARBUDA METEOROLOGICAL SERVICES

THIS IS FOR THE LEEWARD ISLANDS AND BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS

…AL98 HAS ENTERED THE MONITORED AREA…

At 2 pm ECTor 1800 z the centre of al98 was located near latitude 12.0 north, longitude 40.0 west or about 1498 miles southeast of Antigua and 1696 miles southeast of the British Virgin Islands.

Environmental conditions appear conducive for gradual development of al98 during the next several days while it moves westward to west-northwestward at 15 to 20 mph across the central tropical atlantic.

A tropical depression is likely to form by the early to middle part of next week while the system approaches and then moves near or over the Lesser Antilles.

Maximum sustained winds are near 25 mph with higher gusts. The estimated minimum central pressure is 1010 mb.

On its present track, the system will be near the Leeward Islands in two to three days. Hence, watches may be required for some of the islands within the next 48 hours.

Residents should complete their hurricane plans and be prepared to start to implement them. All residents are urged to monitor the movement of al98 closely and be prepared to act.
