Work has started on a project in Golden Grove New Extension in St. John’s Rural West to alleviate excessive flooding whenever there is heavy rainfall.

Through an initiative of the National Office of Disaster Services (NODS) with funding from the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) and Global Affairs Canada, a
bridge is being re-constructed to accommodate a larger volume of water and hence, reduce the level of flooding that occurs there.

During the November 2020 floods caused by a low-pressure system, the St. John’s Rural West District experienced the most reported impacts and property damage.

Approximately 200 households were negatively impacted by significant flooding and vector borne diseases because
of the stagnant water left by the floodwaters.

This project seeks to provide protection against similar hazards in the area. Work is being carried out by a local contractor and is being supported by the Ministry of Works.

NODS is expressing appreciation to residents for their patience during the construction phase considering the delays experienced by inclement weather and notes that it is determined to see the completion of the project by September.
