By Dale C. S. Destin – Published 10 January 2024 | Introduction – As we embrace the dawn of a new year and delve deeper into the midst of the winter season in the northern hemisphere, we find ourselves transitioning into the drier phase of our region’s annual cycle.

As a nation grappling with scarcity of water resources, this time of year serves as a stark reminder of this ongoing challenge. The onset of our 2024 dry season signals the imperative for all of us to persist in or initiate our efforts to conserve water usage, striving for optimal efficiency.

Bearing the weight of past water shortages in our collective memory, it becomes increasingly crucial to value every droplet and make conscientious choices to preserve this invaluable resource.

A Brief Overview of Our Dry Season

Our dry season officially runs from January 1 to June 30 each year. During this time, the North Atlantic Subtropical High-Pressure System coupled with the trade winds, Saharan Dust, cooler sea surface temperatures and limited weather disturbances provide the perfect recipe for minimal precipitation.

The season’s typical lull is February-March, when conditions are most unfavourable for cloud formation and development. March has eclipsed February for the driest month of our region since the 1971-2000 climate period.
