ST. JOHN’S, Antigua, 22nd December 2023 – The Antigua Public Utilities Authority prepares for overhead to underground conversion of a portion of its power distribution system from the junction of WIOC Pond and Friars Hill Road to Government House.

The Ministry of Housing, Works, Lands, & Urban Development has commenced the National Highway & Community Beautification Project on Friars Hill Road in which the Antigua Public Utilities Authority was consulted on the feasibility of the project along with the timeline for the removal of the overhead lines.

During the previously concluded road rehabilitation project, the APUA Electricity, Telecommunications, and Water Business Units would have made provisions for and altered infrastructural upgrades to allow for more efficient maintenance operations.

As part of these changes, preparations were made by the Electricity and Telecommunications Business Unites for an overhead to underground conversion. The process involves installing new underground cables, transformers, and other necessary equipment.

The project is a significant undertaking that aims to minimize power outages caused by inclement weather conditions and improve the overall resilience of the electricity network.

The APUA Electricity Business Unit anticipates that the energizing of the underground distribution system is anticipated to take place by the end of the first quarter of 2024.
