Dale C. S. Destin – Published 30 October 2023 | A historic moment was etched into the records when Tammy became the first hurricane to make landfall on Barbuda in October.

Earlier in the month, Philippe became the first tropical storm to make landfall on Barbuda in October. Even more extraordinary is that for the first time ever, two named storms (tropical storms or hurricanes) made landfall on Barbuda in the same month and in the same year. And the story only gets more intriguing from there.

What makes this dual landfall even more remarkable is that both Tammy and Philippe made landfall within mere stone throws of each other, both finding their way ashore at the southern tip of Barbuda.

The likelihood of such an event was an astonishing 0.20 percent, with a return period estimated at once every 500 years. To put this into perspective, it’s five times rarer than the occurrence of lightning striking the same place twice, a phenomenon with a return period of once every 100 years.
