The Ministry of Health (MoH)in collaboration with the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) hosted a three-day Incident Command System workshop at the Medical Benefits Scheme Conference room from 4th to 6th October 2023.

Peter Bergess representing the Pan American Health Organization was the Instructor of the course which is a management tool for coordinating incidents or events that may exceed the daily capacity to respond.

Health Disaster Coordinator for Antigua and Barbuda, Dr Lori-ann Henry-Johnson stated that most Caribbean countries have adopted the ICS as their standard for emergency response and operational deployment and it is therefore critical to provide training for all first responders who may be called upon to function in an ICS environment.

This course introduces the concepts and principles of the ICS. It includes several
scenarios, examples, and opportunities for participants to apply what they have
learned, when deployed. Participants were selected for this course based on the fact that they are likely to be involved in a community’s response to major events or mass casualty incidents.

The represented departments were police officers; fire officers; health and medical professionals,; emergency medical technicians coast guard and military personnel; airport and sea port authorities; disaster managers; para-military; and non governmental organizations (NGOs), such as Red Cross volunteers and security staff.
