STATE MEDIA – Two employees of the Antigua Public Utilities Authority (APUA) Water Business Unit have been rushed to hospital, after a frightening incident while on the job Friday evening 14th July 2023.
The two, aged 44 and 27, were in an excavated area carrying out mainline replacement work when dirt, stones and debris caved in on them. The 27-year-old, who lives in Willikies, was covered up to his chin, while the 44-year-old from Cooks Hill was covered up to his thigh.
Other employees and independent contractors on the scene rushed to their assistance and feverishly used their hands to help the trapped men. They eventually managed to extricate the 27-year-old, while first responders completed the rescue of the 44-year-old.
The incident happened at the junction of Pigotts and Fitches Creek Drive, as the men were close to completing the job they had been working on for most of the day.
Both were rushed to the hospital with bruises, swelling and other injuries, but remained conscious. APUA says it is providing the requisite support and has already made contact with its insurance providers to expedite any assistance.
